Shri P. Chidambaram, Trustee and Member, Executive Committee and Chair of the Investment Committee

Shri Palaniappan Chidambaram is a senior Indian political leader and lawyer with a long career in national governance and economic policy. He received his bachelor’s degree in law from the Madras Law College and M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He began his professional life as a senior advocate and later entered politics, serving multiple terms as a Member of Parliament and Union Minister of State and Cabinet Minister in the Government of India.

He was elected to the Parliament from the Sivaganga Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu in 1984 and was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers in the government headed by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 21 September 1985 as a Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Commerce. He was elevated to the rank of Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in January 1986. In October of the same year, he was appointed to the Ministry of Home Affairs as Minister of State for Internal Security. He continued to hold both offices until general elections were called in 1989.

In June 1991, he was inducted as a Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce, by the then Prime Minister Mr P V Narasimha Rao.  During his tenure from 2004 onward as Union Minister for Finance, under the United Progressive Alliance with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, he presented several key national budgets noted for structural fiscal and tax reforms. He served as Union Home Minister from Nov 2009 to July 2012 contributing to institutional strengthening and national security frameworks during his tenure.  He served as Union Finance Minister for the third time between 2012 and 2014.

Since 2014 he has been a member of the Rajya Sabha, He was also the head of Congress Manifesto Committee for the 2019 and 2024 Indian General Elections. In recognition of his service and leadership across ministries, Shri. Chidambaram has been acknowledged within policy circles.  He was included in Time 100 list in 2013.
